I have just gone back to personal training. Oh what a joy!!!! I have had an amazing breakthrough. I have realised that I am MISERABLE without training. I have done without my usual workouts for so long I have not realised just how much I loove being pushed to my limit. Oh my god it is amazing.
The thing is, I am a lazy bones and will never push myself to my limit and so the benefits of paying a personal trainer to do so is unbelievable.
It is incredible. But the key is to first, find the right trainer for you. I need cardio at the moment. I need to burn fat and burn fat fast. Then I need to tone and I don’t need heavy or even many weights to do so. I need to be challenged and I need variety. I hunt down my trainers until I find one I like. I ask a million questions and then I get honest with them. When I am feeling all empowered I sit them down and tell them all my little cheats - like taking longer than I need to recover, or not running as fast as I can. I explain that I am focused and determined but I need to be pushed. If I am not begging for mercy then I am not being worked hard enough.
I also do my own stretching and warm up thus making sure I get a good one hour workout. Anyone can stretch and do a ten minute walk/jog on the treadmill - you don’t need someone to guide you through that. Maybe get them showing you the stretching first time around but take control and get the most for your money.
Remember you are the boss so make sure you get what you want out of your session. The reasons I do things like personal training and soccer is that I take control but taking control out of my hands. I HAVE to turn up to soccer training and games or I will get kicked out. I HAVE to turn up to my sessions because I pay for them up front during the week. Manipulate yourself so that you do the training you need to make your goals come true. Even if you can't afford a trainer every week get them once a month. You will be amazed at just how much you can do then set the bar higher for your own personal workouts. Try to get your heart rate close to that you have during PT.
Know what holds you back. Make a list at how you cheat, sabotage yourself or just opt out of what YOU NEED TO DO. Then actively go about solving how you will get around it. Then do whatever it takes to maximise your opportunities to work out.
I never thought I would see the day where I will now live life very differently. I will never live like I have these last two months. I will do everything I can to arrange my exercise around these horrendous schedules and I will do whatever I can to stay fit and have the sessions I have missed that are vital to my health and well being.
It is a continuous path of learning but every year I become wiser and learn more and more about myself.
If you have not joined a team sport or had personal training yet I recommend it - you never know till you try it and hey you might even like it and what it does for your body and your state of mind. Xx
